At Rapoport Academy, we are committed to encouraging, supporting, and empowering our students to become their best selves. The counseling team is excited for the opportunity to support your child's mental health and wellness.

February - International Self Esteem Month

As we navigate the school year together, We wanted to share some thoughts on a topic that plays a crucial role in your child’s success both in and out of the classroom: self-esteem. A healthy sense of self-esteem empowers children to face challenges confidently, build positive relationships, and develop resilience.

Why Self-Esteem Matters: Self-esteem influences how children perceive themselves and their abilities. When children feel good about who they are, they’re more likely to take on new challenges, persevere through difficulties, and embrace learning opportunities.

Signs of Healthy Self-Esteem:

  • Confidence in trying new things

  • Positive self-talk (e.g., “I can do this!”)

  • Willingness to ask for help when needed

  • Ability to handle mistakes and learn from them

How You Can Support Your Child’s Self-Esteem at Home:

  1. Praise Effort, Not Results: Celebrate hard work and perseverance, even if the outcome isn’t perfect.

  2. Encourage Independence: Let your child make age-appropriate choices and solve problems on their own.

  3. Model Positive Self-Talk: Share how you handle challenges and mistakes with a growth mindset.

  4. Listen Actively: Show interest in your child’s thoughts and feelings without judgment.

  5. Set Realistic Expectations: Help your child set achievable goals and celebrate progress.

Valentine’s Day and the Power of Self-Love: With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s a perfect time to emphasize the importance of self-love. Encourage your child to recognize their unique qualities and strengths, and remind them that loving themselves is just as important as showing love to others. Simple activities like writing a “self-love” note or sharing something they’re proud of can help reinforce positive self-esteem.

When to Seek Additional Support: If you notice persistent signs of low self-esteem—such as excessive self-criticism, withdrawal from activities they used to enjoy, or reluctance to try new things—please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support both you and your child. Together, we can help our children build the confidence and self-love they need to thrive!
